Mechanical systems Sensing and response

Voice Activated Mechanical Dog

SKU E2K-JIN-DP-TM-0350

A wooden dog that stands on four linkage legs and waits. Clap, and the sound sensor in its head starts the motor, so the crank discs turn and the legs begin to walk. It runs for a while, stops on its own, and waits for the next clap.

What they'll learn

Four ideas, one dog

All of it sits in the chain between a clap and a leg swinging forward.

Systems thinking

A sound becomes a signal, the signal drives the motor, the legs walk.

Mechanical transmission

The motor's gear set trades speed for turning force.

Mechanical systems

One turning shaft becomes four legs, swinging in turn.

Fault isolation

Signal, motor or a binding leg: find which one stops it walking.

What's in the box

Body, four legs and a sound sensor

  • Plywood boards, labeled L1 to L17, R1 to R17 and C1 to C11
  • 1× voice control delay module, with the sound sensor and its indicator light
  • 1× reduction motor, with the gear set built in
  • 1× motor clamp, holding the motor to the chassis board
  • 1× two-cell battery box, wired for 3 volts
  • 2× lengths of wire, one red and one black
  • 2× head shafts, one short and one long
  • Iron shafts, 75 mm, running across the body
  • Shaft sleeves, spacing and holding the shafts
  • Small pedestals, for the axle brackets
  • Screws in four types: 4 mm threaded, 4 mm, 6 mm and 8 mm
  • 1× illustrated English manual, 24 steps

You'll need to supply: 2 × AA batteries, which are not in the box, and a small screwdriver. That is the whole tool list the manual gives, and there is no glue, no flame and no scissors anywhere in this build. One thing it does not cover: Step 3 asks you to strip about 1.5 cm of insulation from the red and black wires before screwing them into the motor, without saying what to use for it, so plan to have an adult do that part. The manual also asks that the whole build be done with a teacher or an adult alongside.

How this build works

See mechanics in motion

Build the model, set it loose, and understand the science by watching it work.

Build

Twenty-four steps, four screw types, and boards labeled left, right and center rather than numbered. The wiring comes first, so you can test the module before anything else goes together.

Play

Fit two AA cells, set it down on a hard floor and clap. The indicator lights, the motor starts, and the legs begin to swing.

Experiment

Clap from the next chair, then from across the room, then quietly. Work out how loud a sound has to be, and from how far, before it starts.

Essential information for classroom integration and school purchasing.

Every kit starts as a box of parts and turns into something kids can actually use. Making that happen means following directions and fixing mistakes along the way. They're tackling real engineering challenges, but to them, it just feels like play.

Before the sound module goes into the body, wire it to the battery box and power it up on its own. Predict which sounds will make its light come on, then test a clap, a spoken word and a tap on the table, and note what happens each time. After the build, if the motor runs but the dog doesn't walk, work out whether the problem is the signal, the motor or a leg that is binding, changing only one thing at a time. What it shows: a sound becomes an electrical signal, the signal drives a geared motor, and linked legs turn that motion into walking.
Whether you're exploring circuits in a science lab, tackling gears in a makerspace, or learning at home on the living room table, these kits fit right in. One quick tip if you're building a whole class set: build one kit yourself first, so you know where students are likely to need a hand.

Reviews

Nothing here yet — and we'd rather say so

Verified reviews will appear on this page as soon as the first Mechanical Dogs are built at home and in classrooms. We don't carry ratings over from other kits in the range, and we don't publish anything that isn't from a verified buyer.

If you've built this one with your class, we'd like to hear how it went — what worked, what didn't, and what you'd change.
